Fuchsia in Fusion Tea Party by {MAG}rouge

We decided to celebrate our announcement of {MAG}rouge with some of our friends in the wedding industry and what better way to do so with a fun tea party. We decided to move away from the vintage style tea partys that we all know and love, and do something a little different. As Judit has lived in China for several years she's quite the expert on the 'art of tea' so we gave it a little Asian/Moroccan twist, and featured several delicious teas from those areas. As well as that we had macarons, sago pudding, lemonade scones (recipe is in the magazine!!), and the most delicious chocolate torte you've ever tasted!! Naturally the gorgeous gorgeous photos are by the girls of Sutherland Kovach, and there honestly were people there, they were just all a little camera shy - ironic since most of them were photographers!! The fuchsia stationery was designed by moi, and I made little favour bags in the same print that was used on the stationery, and filled it with exotic tea.

Outfit of the week - Out to Lunch

Oh doesn't this just have you dying to head out for a long lunch with the girls, sipping pimms all afternoon on the sunny porch of a southern style estate? It's so perfectly ladylike. How sweet is that blue blazer? And of course I really think an outfit like this needs that little pop of red lipstick to top it off.

Matakana wedding by Danelle Bohane

It's always a good day when I feature a Danelle Bohane wedding on the blog! Her work is so dreamy and romantic... truly a feast for the eyes! Jess and Joel got married up in Matakana which is such a gorgeous area and has an abundance of amazing locations for photo opportunities. How stunning is this field that Danelle found for them? I love it! I will hand you over to the newly weds to give their take on the day... including the following three tidbits of advice for anyone planning a wedding!

1. Wedding tips - make the most of the resources around you, include friends an family!

2. Make sure your wedding reflects who you are as a couple!

3. Not everything will go according to plan so be prepared to be a bit flexible!

Right from the outset we wanted our wedding to really reflect who we are as a couple! Joel grew up in Thames and I in Whangarei so we both have a bit of country heart in us. I spent a lot of time in holiday periods in the Matakana/Omaha area so thought it would be special to get married there. We were so stoked to discover the adorable Puhoi church and fell in love with its farmland surrounds. Stables in Matakana maintained our country feel and with its two large open fireplaces offered the most beautiful ambience.

On the morning of the wedding the boys went surfing at Piha, meanwhile the ladies arose at 6am to begin their preparations. We had a bridal party of 14! Originally we thought that was ridiculous and settled for two each, but before long knew we were selling ourselves short and that we really valued having our best mates alongside of us even if it was a tribe! My Aunty and mum made the bouquets for the wedding, and a good friend did all our wedding stationery.

Joels wee 2yr old nephew Zion made everyone giggle by his impressive sprint up the aisle with th rings. We enjoyed incorporating he people we loved into our day. Our favors were wee honeypots filled with northland honey with tags that said "spread the love".

We loved working with Danelle as she was so creative and easy to work with. On the day our main photo location got shut down and she quickly saved the day with a wee buttercup field she had tucked up her sleeve!!

An earthy yet pretty palette don't you think? There are so many colours that can be paired with sage green, but I'll always love it with rustic neutrals. It's such a versatile colour scheme, working for a vineyard wedding as much as a ballroom setting.

So we had our first shoot for {MAG}rouge yesterday as I mentioned and OMG did it turn out amazing... well it certainly looked so through my eyes, and I cannot wait to see the magic that Hannah & Jasmine created! Our models were absolute rockstars I tell ya! After the launch of the first issue and then the Christmas break it feels like time is quickly running away on us and the second issue will be due before we know it, so we have a busy few weeks ahead!! But believe me they are always fun! We have our second boot week planned which of course is always great as it involves lots of Judit's amazing food!!

Well it's been sometime since I posted any work on here... blame the weather!! I love the colours that Anna & Patrick chose for their Arboretum stationery suite! Do you something lovely planned for your weekend?

Board#168: Creme Caramel

Happy Friday!! I'm delighted to say that the sun has made an appearance over Auckland the past few days and has been welcomed with open arms!! I went to the beach a few nights ago and it was swamped (well by New Zealand standards... probably equivalent to a winters day in California!)... families picnicking everywhere, people swimming, full of the joys of summer... twas great to see! I even managed to shoot a couple of invitations suites finally (2 down, 22 or so to go!!) so I'll start to share them on the blog just as soon as I can. Maybe tomorrow.

So for those of you who read Postcards & Pretties this board may look a little familiar since a couple of days ago she posted a board that is remarkably similar.. even using a couple of the same images! When I saw Chris's board I messaged her to ask if she'd somehow taken a peek inside my computer and/or head since I put this together weeks ago!! This happens so often with us it's uncanny. We'll very often say the same thing or be about to feature the same thing, but as they say great minds think alike and since her wonderful blog is one of my very favourites that can only be a good thing right? So today we're doing our first team shoot for Issue 2 of {MAG}rouge which is very exciting!!! It's coming along nicely with some amazing contributions lined up! I hope you have a wonderful Friday planned whatever you are doing :-)

Colorado Wedding by Laura Murray

This gorgeous Basalt, Colorado wedding from Laura Murray is full of personality and character. Anna, the lovely bride, is a stylist so has infused the day with an array of gorgeous details. Their wedding venue set in the mountains was the first (and likely only) wedding held on the site. Their good friend lives on this amazing piece of property, and the private home made the most spectacular wedding site. On the property is an old bandstand (which served as their alter) and a saloon that still functions - which made the most perfect cocktail hour location. And with a BBQ dinner and a bluegrass band playing throughout the night it would seem the guests had a fabulous relaxed time. Anna's gorgeous croquet dress is from BHLDN gown... and of course is perfectly accessorised with Dale's tan suit (side note... I wish NZ grooms would wear less black and more colours like this!) And get this... that adorable 'I do' sign was constructed by her best friend’s father out of the floorboards of an old jaguar. How cool is that?

I was delighted to have my friends André & Sofia from Brancoprata feature in the first issue of {MAG}rouge with this adorable tea party shoot. They are such a formidable duo I just knew they would provide us with plenty of lovely inspiration. Check out the gorgeous paper goodies that Sofia created!! Definitely looks like a fab way to spend the afternoon with a group of your closest girlfriends if you ask me!!

Outfit of the week - Grey Stripes & Tan

I love this colour combo especially with the addition of the tan accessories! If you haven't already worked it out I'm a big fan of tan/brown accessories. I'm sure I must be very predictable by now! This is the perfect look for a casual summery outing... brunch with your girlfriends, stroll in the park, icecream at the beach.... actually that sounds like the perfect day out doesn't it :-)

This is the most dreamy shoot from South African photography Rensche Mari... it was actually a fashion shoot for a magazine, however it is a real couple and ahem... how gorgeous are they? Pink and Chocolate Brown was such a huge thing a few years back... in fact I used them in my own wedding, but in the past few years you haven't seen so much of it. That's not to say it isn't still just as lovely and I think used with this palest of pinks as it is here, is super pretty! I think it's a colour palette that works with a lot of different style weddings, from rustic to elegant, to modern and anything in between.

Good morning Monday!! Well I'm officially back on deck as of today!! I just want to start the week off by saying a HUGE thank you to all my new readers. I'm not sure what's happened in the past couple of weeks but reader numbers have doubled week on week... so thank you so very much for visiting! I spent some time over my break working on the blog so I'm hideously organised for me!! Like posts scheduled in WAY ahead of time which sadly excites me to no end. The plan is to free up my daily blogging time as I'm going to be very busy on the magazine and with Ruby & Willow over the next few weeks, so let's hope I can continue to be this organised as to head further into the year.

Burlap & Knits shoot by Brumley & Wells

I'm thrilled to bring the gorgeousness of this shoot by Brumley & Wells to you this Saturday morning!! If you're a burlap loving, texture mad chick like myself, then this will suit you right down to the ground. No it's not a wedding or an engagement shoot but it's utterly inspiring nonetheless! And so gorgeously pretty!! Annie from Brumley & Wells lets us in on the inspiration behind the shoot... and how clever is she having made the scarf and leg warmers herself... not to mention putting the teepee together!

"With winter nudging me indoors, I had been on an unreasonable crafting spree. I crocheted the dusk grey scarf and oversized leg warmers and added some of my pet dove's feathers to a headpiece I made a few months back. I had been itching to build a teepee because of some beautiful inspiration I found on pinterest. One of our art students was over to work on a project, and he ended up building it with me. It takes only 25 dollars and 30 minutes to make this teepee! The light I hang inside of it is a ball jar covered in burlap, with christmas lights shoved inside. The moccasins, Breyer deer, oversized shirt, stirrup belt and the fringe on the teepee were all items I've thrifted over the last year. The bulky ring is actually an antler ring in it's rough stage. Jake makes these with a dremel tool. My engagement ring was a finished, polished antler ring with "agape" engraved in it. I love it! I realized that all of these things that were sitting around my house would make an incredible styled shoot. All I had to do was wait for a dreamy, overcast day.

Elizabeth was a perfect model for this shoot, and I had a blast doing her hair and makeup while she totally took over my iPod. Jake and I were thrilled with the way all of the details turned out, and forgot about the cold just long enough to capture these images. Enjoy!"

Board#166: Melon Sorbet

Doesn't this just scream summer? Summer... hmm, we're supposed to be in the thick of it but it doesn't even feel like it's started. I would say we've had a handful of summery days at best. In the seven years since I've been back living in New Zealand, this is by far the worst it's been... we were so incredibly spoilt last year with hot sunshiny days. Here's hoping it's late to start and stretches on well into autumn!!

Teal and red, baby blue and melon, aqua and coral... they're all such fun colour combinations. This calls out for a wedding that doesn't take itself too seriously. How much do I want one of those drinks trolleys? Just to pull around my house when I have guests!! And that melon sorbet is looking tempting no matter what the weather is doing!

Amy Butler Fabric Giveaway

{MAG}rouge feature... Road Trip Shoot by Sutherland Kovach

The theme for the first issue of the {MAG}rouge magazine was Road Trip so of course we had to go on a little one of our own to create our team shoot. Using our fabulous models Toni & Pierre, the idea behind the shoot was a couple heading away for a local road trip for their honeymoon - which in these still rather challenging economic times, seems like a great option. We had borrowed a very vintage land-rover for the shoot which posed some quite amusing problems for myself and my husband on the day. So apparently vintage land-rovers aren't the most straight forward vehicles to drive.. and with a 6ft 2 hubby and a seat that didn't move from it's position it made for a rather amusing start... I was literally doubled over in giggles for the first 10 minutes of driving!! So once he got used to driving it, we were cruising along the motorway, feeling quite cool in our very vintage getup (although not talking to each other as it was so noisy inside) and about 30mins into the trip, going up quite the hill (!!) the clutch decided to give up on us. We literally could. not. change. gears!! Naturally panic sets in, and we were in quite possibly the worst place to stall with no where to pull over, cars racing past us at 100km/hr!! Thankfully we made it to the top of the hill before it completely died, and we had to wait on the side of the road to be rescued by a fellow rougie and then scramble around for a stand in land-rover! It's amusing in hindsight but at the time my husband was pacing the side of the main road cursing that he'd offered to help me out... thank goodness Judit was at the other end with some of her magical sweet treats to ease the pain!

Outfit of the week - Chartreuse & Gold

I've always been a big fan of chartreuse green so this dress leapt out at me, and whilst I probably would've usually accessorised with silver, lately I'm on a gold kick and I think it actually works perfectly well with it. And just a tiny touch of black for the nails and accessories give it a little punch! What do you think? Would you wear this colour?

If you're anything like me you'll be yearning for a European holiday after seeing this board. Oh to be wandering the cobblestone streets of Salzburg, travelling through the lovely villages in the South of France, exploring the narrow alley ways of Venice, taking in the beauty of the fiords in Norway, gazing up at the amazing churches in Estonia... I could go on forever! I feel so lucky that I have managed to see a lot of Europe but it's been a few years now and I am itching to return, quite simply to just wander and soak it all up. When I travel I just love to explore (the husband not so much... he likes to know what we're doing!!) and see how the other half live. I always want to immerse myself into their lives just for a short spell! Anyhow before I get too carried away with my soliloquy, where does this board take you to? Or where does it have you wanting to visit? Wherever it is I'm sure you'll agree it makes for the prettiest of wedding inspiration right? Living in a young country like New Zealand we don't have these types of amazing buildings and I always think they make for the most elegant of venues.

Country Estate Wedding from Kate MacPherson

Happy Monday! Did you all have a nice weekend? Hopefully the sun was shining in your part of the woods (it certainly wasn't in mine... oh except for about 5 minutes before the sun went down on Sunday!). I was thrilled when I found out a couple of days before my client Melody's wedding that Magnolia Rouge favourite Kate MacPherson would be shooting it... and once I saw the images of course I knew it was the perfect feature for our debut issue of {MAG}rouge. Melody was an absolute gem over the months we worked on her stationery and these photos confirmed she's just as gorgeous on the outside as she is on the inside. Oh and by the way that gorgeous robe Melody is wearing to get ready in is from Plum Pretty Sugar who make the most divine lounge wear. A colour story - Apricot & Red

I had so much fun working on this colour story for {MAG}rouge!! Inspired by the amazing Mangosteen fruit, I love the combination of the rich red with caramel, apricot and peach tones. I had this gorgeous apricot floral fabric that worked perfectly with them and from there it took shape. Don't you think this would make for such a pretty wedding colour palette?... and that's coming from someone who is not the biggest fan of red in weddings.

Christmas Decorating and a Happy New Year

If you haven't already gathered posting is going to be on the light side for the next couple of weeks. I'm not back on deck officially until the 16th of January... woohoo!! 2011 was such an overwhelmingly busy time for me, I really need some time out to work out how to take Ruby & Willow forward. Don't get me wrong busy is great, but not when it means you can't operate as efficiently as you'd like to be. So I need to work out how best to manage the stationery side of things together with my new commitments with {MAG}rouge... which is a project I absolutely love working on. I may cut back a little on the amount of jobs I take on with R&W... again, just trying to make it all work. I also lost all the time I had to simply browse through blogs, magazines, to get inspired and do my own little creative projects so in 2012 I want to ensure I have more time not only for that, but simply to 'smell the roses'. When my last job went out the door prior to Christmas, I sat in the sun in a deckchair, (thankfully it was one of the handful of sunny days we've had this summer!) in my garden, with a book, and was practically in a state of euphoria over just being able to 'sit and be'. Then I even pottered in the garden, without the stress of knowing I had to rush back to get things done. I need to do that more... it's good for the soul, to just take time out.

Most of the time this year I've felt 10 steps behind, like I'm always playing catch up, and never quite on top of things, and to be perfectly honest, I really don't like that feeling! I've always been one to work better under pressure (yep best school marks were on projects started the night before!) but I seriously need some things to change going forward. For one I need to become far more organised! Two; I want to focus more on design, which is afterall what I got into this business for, which means having help to do all the tasks that I'm not so great at (that's quite the long list!!). Three; I want to spend more time building the letterpress side of Ruby & Willow, which I haven't been able to spend as many hours on as I'd have liked to so far. Four; this little ol' blog may be due for an overhaul... again something I'm still considering. It is what sparked the whole {MAG}rouge thing, but it's still part of me rather than the team as a whole so I need to work out how it's going to sit going forward. I'm also going to be taking on sponsors in the New Year so if you're interested in that please flick me an email. This is something I've been asked about several times over the past year or so it's time to take that leap. I'm super excited about where {MAG}rouge is going... and holy moly our next cover shoot... well that seriously takes the cake... beyond thrilled with what we have lined up!!

Before I go I'd just like to send out a huge heartfelt thank you to all my lovely readers who take the time to visit each day and leave lovely feedback and comments both here and on my facebook page. I appreciate all of you so much! And to all the fabulously talented vendors and people I've met through not only this blog, but facebook and twitter, I've loved getting to know you and I hope to have more time in 2012 to interact and work together.

Finally... I had some fun with my Christmas decor this year so thought I'd share a little of it with you. As you can see I steered away from the red and gold and went with a fresh, slightly woodsy look this year! What colours did everyone else go with?

I'm sure you won't as it really is just gorgeous Chrismasy inspiration! This is where my friendship with Vania & Christine began, when they asked me to create stationery for this delightful shoot. I love the colours in this board for Christmas... a modern twist on the traditional red and green. In fact I'm using two of these colours myself this year? Can you guess which one I'm leaving out?

Mudbrick Vineyard Wedding by Danelle Bohane

Kate & Ranko's fabulous Waiheke Island wedding was one of the gorgeous features in the first issue of {MAG}rouge, and we were thrilled to feature Danelle's work as not only is she an incredibly talented photographer but she's an absolute sweetheart as well... and trust me this girl is going places!! Check out the latest New Zealand Woman's weekly... a recent celebrity wedding on the cover was also shot by Danelle.
About half way down this post is a shot that as soon as the {MAG}rouge team saw it... we were like 'we have to have this wedding'!! It's one of the most fabulous shots I've seen - the two of them in a field. It has it's own electrical charge!!! With an almost 'twilight' (yes the movie!!) like feel to it. And how divine are the table settings styled by Valley & Norfolk? Baby's breath, kraft, twine, cute stationery... perfection basically!! We were lucky enough to meet the ever so lovely Kate & Ranko at our launch party and they are just adorable together!! Best wishes for a lifetime of happiness to you both!

Happy Friday everyone! I have the sweetest engagement shoot for you today from the very talented Laura Murray. Jessica - the owns Vintage Affair Rentals in Colorado and styled this super cute 'dessert for two' themed shoot for her and her fiance Greg. Jessica's Mum made the quilt and bunting for her and I would say by the looks of this there will be a lot of goodness in her wedding to come! Doesn't this look like the most romantic spot to partake in dessert for two? It certainly has me hankering after a sunny day in a field - wishful thinking around here right now... yesterday absolutely poured with rain ALL day long and today is forecast for more of the same :-(

A colour story - Emerald, Teal & Yellow

A few months ago I started having a play around styling various props I had with my stationery, and photographing colour stories of them... just experimenting for the magazine and myself I guess. And really just having fun with it. I absolutely love doing this and hope to find the time to do a lot more in the future. Would love to know your thoughts on this... do you think this should become a regular series? Does this inspire you for your wedding at all? Or just in general? Queen of the Road shoot by Simply Bloom

If you missed the launch of the inaugural issue of {MAG}rouge last week you may not have had the chance to lay your eyes on this beautiful and ethereal shoot from our friends over at Simply Bloom. When we first mooted the idea of an online magazine between us, we didn't really think too much about the cover shoot, and when whilst emailing Simply Bloom about another project I had worked on with them (these cute little invites I did for Christine's baby shower earlier in the year), they mentioned a cover shoot, we were naturally over the moon! And once the {MAG}rouge team came up with the road trip theme, and the girls found that incredible gold car, the shoot started to take shape. So we want to send a huge thank you to both Vania and Christine who we adore, and who are just so insanely talented, and also to the lovely models who jumped at the chance of doing this shoot with them.

Tarureka Estate Wedding by Kate MacPherson

Every now and then a wedding comes along that just sings your tune, and this for me is one of them. It's so subtle in it's elegance, with a refined and timeless beauty that has been captured so beautifully. Kate MacPherson really is a genius behind the camera. Chloe & Ben got married at the gorgeous Tarureka Estate in the Wairarapa, and the olive groves at In the Grove provided the perfect backdrop for their portraits. Chloe's Collete Dinnigan dress works in so well with the surroundings and the black and whites of her are pure pieces of art don't you think?

Board#163: Apple Pie & Ribbons

I know, I know, I kinda launched a magazine and all but disappeared!! But this week I'm back with some stunning real weddings and a couple of inspiration boards. I'm trying to get all my stationery jobs in order before taking a few weeks off over the summer (that is if summer ever decides to arrive!! Seriously it's been the windiest three months I can ever remember, and now the next 10 days... rain, rain and more rain!!). I also plan on getting some things done around the house and garden... have finally made major in roads in my dining room decor which is VERY exciting, and will hopefully finish decorating my office too. We will also be working on Issue number 2 of {MAG}rouge which is very exciting and I will spend some time catching up on photographing stationery jobs from the past six months (see aforementioned weather rundown as to why I'm so behind!!) as well as releasing some new designs. With the addition of the magazine to my work load I'm going to take some time out to reassess Ruby & Willow and the direction I want to take it in!
Don't the colours in this board just make for the most fun wedding? And really who doesn't want a rope swing with ribbons at their wedding?

Sooooo if you've been wondering about the radio silence it's because of this little project I've been working on!! {MAG}rouge is finally live and we kicked it off with an amazingly fun launch party last night (check out some of the photos from The Amazing Travelling Photobooth on our facebook page). I have been so privileged to work on this with three other amazing ladies... Hannah & Jasmine from Sutherland Kovach, and Judit Meron from Artisan Cakes, and we've all been completely blown away at the positive response and enthusiasm we've received since going live last night, so thank you thank you thank you. We're incredibly excited about continuing on this journey and working on the next issue! and we hope you'll follow along with us!

If you haven't already we'd love it if you followed along with us on Facebook and twitter. We'll be running a couple of fabulous giveaways over the next month or two as well and we all know how you love a giveaway!

For now though I will be putting my Ruby & Willow hat on for the next few weeks! The blog may be a little quiet as I catch up on things, but going forward it will support {MAG]rouge which will come out quarterly (digital only, no plans to print :-)

And I really can't finish this post without a shout out to my amazing husband who has been SO incredibly supportive... my biggest champion!! He's put up with a house full of cackling ladies for the past few weekends... not just for a few hours, but literally camped out all day and at times until 4am!! Even cooking for us! He's the best!! Likewise to the other husbands in the team who have been very generously taking over childcare!!

I don't often use a lot of black in my boards, but I love it with a crisp apple green and white palette. I love the idea of using actual apples in the decor as well... so simple but very effective. An outdoor garden affair with long banquet tables under some big ol' trees strung with fairy lights, sounds pretty fantastic to me. And of course that convertible get away car is a must have!

Good morning, good morning!! Did you have a nice weekend? I know it's Tuesday already but I took a while to get going yesterday. We had {MAG}rouge bootcamp at mine all weekend... like really ALL weekend! Four girls... all set up with computers in my dining room, and we barely left the room! My husband was a saint, putting up with raucous cackling through out the day... and even doing housework around us!! (yep he's a keeper!!). I'm getting very excited to share the big reveal with you... this time next week!! Eeeeeekkk!
In the meantime we're kickstarting the week with a huge dose of pretty today!! This gorgeous bridal session was sent it by Jerry & Jona Blackwell from Forever Photography. It took place at Rachel Ashwell's B&B The Prairie. Doesn't it just look perfectly girly and ladylike?

We don't celebrate thanksgiving here in New Zealand but I think it's such a lovely sentiment to stop and be thankful for all the wonderful things in your life. It's such a pretty colour combination with just a touch of yellow, and one that can be quite sophisticated or more playful for a casual wedding. I'm thrilled to have Carmen & Ingo on the blog again today. They are absolute gems and I love that I get to chat to these amazing people from around the globe through writing this blog. You may remember them from this amazing shoot they did down in Oamaru when they were traveling around New Zealand earlier in the year. And since that post, they have booked two weddings from clients who saw that feature on Magnolia Rouge... which thrills me to bits!! Firstly a lovely couple living in Holland - (funnily enough we also share the surname Holland too!), and secondly the wedding of a fellow wedding blogger... I'm very excited about that one, but more about that closer to the time!!

Marisa & Marko are from the USA and Germany respectfully, and Marisa perused wedding blogs in the lead up to their big day, soaking up as much inspiration as she could. And looking at all the beautiful elements she's infused into the design, I'd say she did a great job! All assisted by wedding planner Doreen Winking. I love that they had a gorgeous photo board to involve all the family members who were unable to be there on the day.

Thanks so much to Carmen & Ingo for sharing their lovely work with us again, and best of luck to the happy couple!

Citron & Grey Pinecone Save the Dates...

Last week I was honoured to guest post for my friends Sofia & Andre on their blog, whilst they were having the time of their lives at the Jose Villa workshop in Mexico (jealous much? I'm no photographer but I'd sure be happy to pretend in order to do that workshop... from what Sofia has told me about it, it sounds amazing and Jose, Joel and the rest of the team sound utterly inspiring!!). I shared this save the date that I designed for Constanze and Adrian, who contacted me from Germany (how cool is that!!) to work on their stationery. Constanze was inspired to use these colours after seeing the below inspiration board I posted a few months back... and I couldn't have been happier to oblige when she gave me such a fun brief to work with... not to mention gorgeous colours! I can't wait to work on their stationery for their December 2012 winter wedding!!

French Kiss Shoot from Vela Images

Get ready for an eye full of loveliness!!! This prettiest of shoots was captured by Greta from Vela Images with gorgeous dresses and headpieces from Natalie Chan. They were kind enough to ask both Judit and I to provide a few stationery and food props for it. Isn't it just divine? Greta shares details of the shoot below...

This was such a fun little shoot to do. We wanted to be a little more daring and different with a vintage theme. Most of the vintage weddings we work on are very beautiful and traditional, which we of course love but we thought it would be fun to try a not so traditional vintage wedding theme but to still retain beautiful and feminine vintage elements. So after watching the movie "Bright Young Things" we decided to use this as our inspiration. "Bright Young Things" is a movie about young and carefree London aristocrats and bohemians, as well as society in general, in the late 1920s through the early 1940s. It was written and directed by Stephen Fry and is so visually rich in 1920 to 1940's vintage glamour.

Rather than a long gown we opted for a knee length cocktail dress from Natalie Chan which is very feminine with lots of girly detail so our bride would still stand out from the crowd and feel special on her wedding day. Rather than a veil or traditional wedding headpiece we choose a matching pink 1940's style bow and button head piece and a fur stole. We wanted our flowers to be dramatic but still very pretty so we went for a mixture of bright and light pink shade blooms that would tie in with the dress but would also make a statement.

We really enjoyed being creative with this shoot and we hope it inspires some of your lovely brides to experiment with colour and different vintage styles. This theme would work very well for a glamorous evening cocktail wedding. You could even ask guests to dress in 1920 to 1940's style attire.

If you haven't already heard of Maisy & Grace, you must head over there now and check it out. This fabulous new business founded by the very lovely Christall Lowe is full of fabulous vintage finds and goodies!! I have had my eye on a few things for a while now! You could pretty much do all your Christmas shopping in one go!

Anyway I found this gem of a DIY over on the Maisy & Grace facebook page last week, and I'm still trying to work out how I can make this for someone and not eat it all myself. Just the ingredients alone look tempting! I've seen the pie in a jar before but this really takes the cake! And hello perfect wee wedding favour!

BROWNIE IN A JAR - The perfect homemade (and cute) gift idea ♥

This recipe fits into our Ball Quart Mason jar. Layer the following into the jar:

1 1/2 cups brown sugar

3/4 cup plain flour

3/4 cup cocoa

3/4 cup walnuts/pecans

1/2 cup chocolate chips/chunks/buttons

Cover lid with pretty fabric or paper, bind with twine and tie on a tag with the following directions:

Preheat oven to 160 degrees celcius

Line an 18x28cm (or similar) baking tin with baking paper

Empty contents of jar into mixing bowl, mix in 3 lightly beaten eggs and 1 cup (225g) of softened butter.

Spread into baking tray and bake for 30-35 minutes

NOM, NOM, NOM!!!

Yellow... the ways I love thee...

11.11.11!!! How many people out there are saying 'I do' today!! I have two clients getting married so a big congrats to them!! The sun is shining, it's going to be a wonderful day! I am finishing off a gorgeous letterpress job today. I have a tonne of jobs from the past few months to share with you, and I tried to get outside yesterday to take some photos as we finally had a sunny day, but what do you know... the wind hampered my efforts!! Soon I'm sure!

Intimate Country Wedding from I do Photography

A lilac dress, a row boat and your pet dog... what more do you need for your big day? Tracy & Alistair got married at Stone Willow in Pukekohe and Jodi Lidstone from I do Photography was there to capture all these pretty moments. It's lovely to see a bride step away from the traditional white/ivory dresses and instill a bit of colour into it. And this lilac is ever so pretty! What's more Tracy's mother designed the dress.. and not only that she grew all the gorgeous delphiniums that were used in the bouquets. The bride herself was very hands on growing basil especially to make pesto for all her guests. I love little touches like that! Lisa Hill from Beautiful Events was on hand to ensure everything ran smoothly and looked beautiful on the day!

Morning!! How are we all? Nice weekend?... did anybody attend a wedding? The weather here wasn't especially wedding like unfortunately, someone's lost the memo that summer is meant to be on it's way! I had a lovely afternoon and evening with this super special lady on Friday... so nice to take time away from my desk to relax... even if we did talk weddings much of the time! We hit the Mexican cafe and had a few too many mojitos... although we stopped just in time to not embarrass ourselves on the dance floor with the Salsa experts!

Doesn't this board just make you instantly think of carefree summer days!! ahhh I'm yearning for them ! (MUST work on my plan to take 3 weeks off over Christmas to actually experience summer this year!!) There really is something about a fruit orchard that makes it so appealing as a wedding venue. I think it takes us back to 'romance' of picking fruit as kids! The places I used to go and do that are all built up and industrialised now which always seems so sad!

Yellow... the ways I love thee...

Phew it's Friday! I've made good on my promise to get up early every day this week. Either 5.15am or 6.45am - depending on the husband's routine. Most mornings are 5.15am - that's when he leaves the house, not gets up!! Crazy I know! And yep I admit yesterday I really really really wanted to ignore him, feign the deepest of sleeps, then lash out at him for daring to actually flick the lights on to wake me up and literally deposit me in my office chair! But he does have a cup of green tea all ready for me so I can't complain, and I have asked him to do it regardless of my protests. I'm trying out this new routine of going to bed at a reasonable time instead of staying up working all hours. I'm sure I'll be more productive this way. So far it's working!! Even if I did sneak in a 30 min nap later in the day :-) And today... Friday, I plan on shutting the computer off around 1ish to spend the afternoon hanging with a friend who's up in Auckland for the day! Yay!

Whilst I know purple and yellow is never going to be everyone's cup of tea, done in the right way it can be such a striking combination. I don't personally like it too bold, I prefer it with a softer smoky lilac or lavender as well as a more intense purple. Invitation: as yet unnamed!!

Another more autumnal palette. I have a bit of a love affair going on with anything terracotta right now and mixed with a mustard yellow it's perfection. So warm and inviting! Invitation: as yet unnamed!!

West Coast beach wedding from Vela Images...

Ella and James are so hip it hurts!!! From her Kathryn Wilson shoes to the adorable flower girls vests this wedding is infused with a casual yet sophisticated vibe. I love it when I find out my clients have booked one of my favourite photographers and in this case with the fabulous Greta from Vela Images, I knew that Ella and James would be in safe hands. And when Greta told me that Ella was rather gorgeous... well she wasn't kidding was she!! Ella you look simply stunning and from what I know of you, the day looks like it fit you perfectly!

From Greta... Ella & James wanted a relaxed and intimate wedding with family and a handful of their closest friends somewhere near the ocean. Being passionate surfers they choose Raglan on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Raglan is one of New Zealand best surf breaks and it is a spot that Ella & James often visit. This wedding was very unique to the couple, Ella & James already have a one year old son called Jake who they wanted to include as much as possible. The family wanted to be relaxed so they spent the morning together before the ceremony and James and Ella even whipped out for a morning surf together before coming back to finish off last minute DIY details and get ready for their wedding together.

The ceremony took place up high on a ridge under a bamboo structure made by family which overlooked the one of the couples favorite surf breaks. The aisle was made from sack cloth laid upon the grass and was sprinkled with white rose petals. The scenery was breathtaking and the ceremony was very intimate and romantic.

Yellow... the ways I love thee...

Good morning, how's your week going? I've been making my husband get me up at the ungodly hour he arises most days in order to get a head start on the day. And as I'm not a morning person and will complain and fight it as much as I can, I've told him to literally deposit me in my office before he leaves for work (at 5.15am!!!)... I'm only two days in to this new routine so it's anyone's guess as to how long it lasts!!
It's been a while since I've shared my colour love series with you. It started some time back with red... since it's my least favourite colour to use in weddings, showcasing the ways in which I did indeed like it. Now yellow I have no issue with... I pretty much LOVE it any which way, so this showcases just a few options, and I'll have some more for you in a couple of days.

I definitely wouldn't love this so much if it were all pastel shades, but the pop of fuchsia really makes it for me! It's utterly feminine and elegant and simply too pretty for words don't you think? I'm in love with this soft buttery yellow. Invitation: as yet unnamed!!

So this isn't a pure yellow, it's more of a citron shade, but I'm counting it as yellow! I love it paired with all types of green and you see yellow with a kelly green a lot but not so much this gorgeous earth olive shade. Really pegs back the shape citron. Invitation: as yet unnamed!!

So what do you think? Do you sway more towards the pretty feminine yellow with shades of pink, or the more rustic earthy appeal of taupe and olive?

Board#156: Green Goddess

Well hello there!! Long time no talk!! I thought I should start the week as I mean to go on... with a blog post a day!!! Last week I kinda fell off the radar... just had to get things done... they're still getting done but hopefully with a slight semblance of normality this week - whatever that is! I had a rush order of 300 pocketfold invitations to get to Taiwan in a matter of a week so that was rather consuming, plus several other jobs on the go, as well as a shoot to plan for over the weekend (which turned out to be interesting when the vintage landrover we borrowed broke down going up a rather busy hill on the main highway north... not an ideal situation at all!!). Anyway I'm looking forward to a easier pace this week... in fact I plan on booking myself 'out of the office' for an entire day of pampering and shopping and me time at some stage! Looking forward to it already!

I never tire of a green palette... especially one as earthy yet pretty as this. I love the shipping lanterns strung between the trees, and the gorgeous use of ferns in the top bouquet!!

Happy long weekend people!! Well if you're in Auckland or anywhere else in New Zealand it's 100% rugby fever this weekend. The excitement in the air is palpable... there is just so much on the line. The mood of the entire country on Monday morning is wholly dependent on 80 minutes of play time tomorrow night. And if not you're from New Zealand and not familiar with the game of rugby and the fervour for which this country has for it, it is not an exaggeration when I say people the length of our small country will be plunged into mourning and depression should it not go our way!! But of course that is all moot talk as I KNOW we will win!!! (dear rugby god, please don't let me have to eat my words!!). I'm very excited for the game tomorrow night, although also nervous... never underestimate your opponent right?

I'm a sucker for any wedding that involves a wooden swing! Throw in a hammock and I'm all over it! This gorgeous vintage garden wedding from Jodi Lidstone of I do Photography was at the home of the bride's parents in Katikati. Wearing a Luci Dibella dress, Sophia dressed her bridesmaids in different style dresses in the one gorgeous pale mint shade. Her Mum put together her stunning bouquets and made flower balls to hang from the Homestead's veranda. I LOVE those bridal group shots on the swing!! Oh and another thing I've been lusting over... that cute little gazebo in the garden... I think it belongs in mine! Beautiful work Jodi... thanks for sharing it with us!

Morning lovelies!! I felt like something a bit bright and spring like today, and I think these muted sorbet colours are just the trick! I have a crazy busy week ahead getting jobs out and trying to work my way through my to-do list. I sat down and wrote it last night... breaking it up between home, garden, business (split into blog, current jobs, letterpress, special project, special project 2, & accounts) and personal well being. Phew I have 94 things on that list! Daunting to say the least. Hopefully I can cross at least 5 of those items off today. Wish me luck!

Happy weekend!! Do you have any exciting plans? We were SO incredibly lucky to have been given tickets to tonight's semi final of the rugby, so we're off to that which should be fun!! And we potentially have tickets to the big game tomorrow too.... will find out later today! I've gotta say it's all getting a bit nerve wracking thinking about the result of that game!! Aside from that I have a lot of work to get through as well and a few things to do around the house.

I've decided that I need to start making an effort with dressing my dining table. I have lots of things tucked away that don't see the light of day often enough, so I'm going to make a conscious plan to change the table setting every couple of weeks. And I'm SO excited to be getting a new dining table soon which will make it even more fun! Have a super weekend folks xo

How pretty is this orange ruffly dress for a bit of spring dressing? I think you could easily take it from the office to a picnic in the park after work with a bit of swapping of the shoes and accessories. Of course at the moment you can't go too far without a trench or mac so you're prepared for spring showers, but luckily there are so many cute options that work with dresses as well as trousers. And of course the ultimate summer shoe... the wedge, would be a perfect match with this.

Another day of rain!! Spring around here seems to be all about rain... gotta say I'm kinda fed up with it! After a rainy winter we'll all craving sunny days and whilst it's warmed up the rain hasn't disappeared!
This board was completely inspired by this amazing shoot from Simply Bloom, styled beautifully by Jen from Green Wedding Shoes. I love the idea of using these pretty sorbet colours in the desert as a change from the more earthy colours you'd usually expect to see. And hello cute teepee... don't we all want one of them in our garden? I know I do! I love this pink paired with the warm caramel tones. Board#152: Textured Ivory

Now I'm sure it won't come as a huge surprise to long time readers that I'm not the hugest fan of black and white. I don't wear a lot of black, and I don't even feature a lot of black in my work. Saying that when the white is warmed up to ivory it's a whole other story. It has such a classic elegance to it, and I especially love it when used with lots of gorgeous textures, lace, wood, textured paper stock. With a couple of pale neutral shades it keeps it so much more interesting that straight forward black and white (sorry to all you die hard b&w lovers!!).

Board#151: Woodland Whimsy

Good morning!! Did you all have a nice weekend? I know it's Tuesday but I'm getting lost in the days at the moment. This past week has been mentally busy and by the weekend I was so tired I had to catch up on some much needed sleep to recoup!! Besides that there were some very important rugby games that had to be watched... I'm already very nervous about the upcoming game this Saturday!!
I have had this board sitting around for EVER and I'm really not sure why I haven't posted it before as it's one of my favourite looks. I love the eclectic and rustic nature of it. It's all a bit rambling and mis matched which adds up to the perfect look in my books! Nothing is overdone, it's a little rough around the edges like nature intended!! And rather than go for all earthy colours, by bringing in a touch of the lavender or lilac shades it adds just the right amount of pretty to it!! Right kids I've gotta get back to it, but hopefully I manage a few more posts this week!!

Incredible Book Invitation Design by It's a Date Design...

I'm in complete awe of this invite from my good friend Lyndsay from It's a Date Design. Her talent... not to mention her patience, is just immense! I can well imagine the time and passion put into each and every one of these amazing invites, and I'm pretty certain this is one invitation that will never see the inside of a rubbish bin!! Each detail is so incredibly well thought out... both by Lyndsay herself and with the bride and grooms input. Aren't they simply amazing? To read more about the process and the story behind it all, head to Lyndsay's website for details. I love getting to know other stationery designers (or stationista's as Lyndsay and I refer to ourselves!!), and Lyndsay has been an amazing support to me since we became friends via Twitter 18 months ago (and we even met up for dinner earlier this year in Melbourne). As someone who never 'trained' as such, I don't know the in's and out's of the programs like others do, and I'm always learning new things. It's wonderful to be able to share knowledge with each other... and just sometimes I might be able to help her out ;-) (not often!)

Morning all! Did you all have a nice weekend? I'm not entirely sure what's happened to spring around here as it's kinda chilly still and very rainy!!! Bring on the warm summer days!! They can't come soon enough for me. But because it's still a little cool and a lot of my readers will just be heading into fall/autumn I think this board kinda covers all bases. I think this is quite the lovely palette for an autumn wedding as it steers clear of the usual deep oranges and reds we often see. Not that I don't love those too... cause I really do, but it's always nice to see something unexpected. And adding a touch of warm yellow into this palette just lifts it and adds a bit of brightness to it. Hope you have a great start to the week! K xo

Sundays Moment...

This is a little moment between my brother and I on my wedding day (our photos were all shot on film and I don't have any scanned copies without watermarks so couldn't take that off) and as it was his birthday yesterday I thought this was appropriate. Happy birthday Scottie!! And excitingly he and his long time girlfriend announced their engagement a few weeks ago... and guess who's in charge of styling!! Woohoo... so excited!! More about the fact that his awesome girlfriend - who I also consider one of my closest friends - is joining our family, but of course it's going to be fun planning the wedding with them. We had our first chat about it today and one thing I got from it... colour, and lots of it! Not like the muted colours I usually run with either... more like Mexican fiesta colour! Fun, fun!!

Jo's romantic dragonfly & butterfly invitations...

I recently had the pleasure of working with the very sweet Jo on her wedding stationery. Jo and Kevin are heading to China to get married later this year followed by a reception in Melbourne, and she had such a lovely story behind the inspiration for her invitation (you can read their story over on The Knotty Bride here). Combining a vintage lace motif with a subtle repeating floral pattern, the design featured a dragonfly and butterfly to represent Jo & Kevin and their story. It was also very important according to Chinese legend that they be flying to the north east corner with the butterfly doing the chasing! Both the invitation and postcard were printed double sided and finished off with a sweet punched out corner shape, and matching printed envelopes. Thanks Jo for being such a sweetheart to work with!!

Board#149: Lavender & Hay

I know, I know, I've been MIA!! I seem to have lost my blogging mojo! Truth be told it's more the time to do it that I've lost. I know this will come as NO surprise at all to many of your who run your own businesses, or do double duty writing a blog as well as working full time, but it's hard!! Really hard sometimes. As business owners we wear so many hats, and it's hard to juggle them all at once or indeed keep on top of all aspects that are involved in a business. My first priority (business wise) has to be my clients! First and foremost I have to focus on the jobs I need to get out the door, and of course there are always other projects on the go that help inspire me creatively. And since relaunching the website I've been so overwhelmed and consumed with work that I've hardly so much as looked at other blogs! Of course being busy is always a great thing and I'm not complaining about it, however I'd love to start feeling on top of things one of these days... like I'm not always 10 steps behind! I still have to try to fit in some balance and spend time with my husband and do all the things that are involved with running a house (something I fail miserably at!!), as well as trying to clear some head space for working out how to decorate said house and garden!

In the interest of full transparency, there are days when I simply don't feel like working, don't want to sit at my desk churning out quotes and emails,... I know, we all have them right? But a 'duvet day' is not an option when it's your own business. There is NEVER, EVER, nothing to be done!! And whilst the freedom of running your own business is highly attractive and one of the things I love the most, there is also no accountability. No boss to question why I haven't done something on time, where is this report etc? And believe me, for me that's definitely a good things by most accounts, but often I think I need that person to keep me on top of things. And also for positive reassurance. I will often send a job out to a client, and a month later have to follow up to see that the invites have even been received as I haven't heard so much as a peep from them. This my friends is disheartening. You spend the time to work on their stationery for their special day and you don't get so much as an acknowledgment. Which is why when my week began with the below email I practically skipped to my desk. Christy mailed me from Taiwan to work on her stationery, and whilst I wouldn't usually share this kind of thing on the blog (it feels a little braggy!) sometimes we all just like a little praise and it's lovely to know that the passion we put into our work is appreciated. This makes it all worth it.

"Your parcel has just arrived!!! I was so excited, I was literally shaking as I opened the package.
And may I just say it is THE most beautiful invitation I have ever seen in my life!!! It's too beautiful to be true. I feel so happy and relieved right now I could start crying any second now.
Thank you so much Kate. You have absolutely outdone what I could dream of.
And the most important thing is I have been stressed out recently and from time to time I would imagine that my wedding was falling apart. Feeling that it's not going to live up to my dream wedding. But seeing the invitation has brought back all my faith, feeling that my wedding might just be that perfect. Thank you so much, Kate!!! If you were next to me right now, I would give you a big hug. Thank you for your patience, your talent and the wonderful work.
I would recommend you to all my friends."

And since I've missed blogging over the past week I thought it was about time I posted something!! I returned to my rustic roots and created a scrumptious board for what I picture to be a mountain wedding in an old weathered barn. With just the right combination of rustic chic and prettiness. (and of course the name inspiration from my friend Erin!)... lace hankies, lavender sachet favours, pretty lilac and lavender bouquets, sweet homemade jam favours. Tell me you don't love it too? Ok phew... this may just been the longest post I've ever written!! I'm off to finish up a fabulous letterpress job I'm working on... can't wait to share it with you... I'm well overdue for some invite photo sessions!!

Wow, what a slack blogger I've been!! I think this has been my longest silence yet!! But I missed you so thought I'd better pop in before the week was out! I've just been so overwhelmed with things I needed it to take a back seat whilst I did my best to get up to speed with the day job. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has these moments in their business. I'd love to hear how others of you out there cope with incredibly busy schedules... have you just learnt to say no? I think that's something I need to learn... in a hurry! Any tricks for time management? I'm all ears!!
I know the colours for this board look quite summery but I think they could also be carried over for an early autumn wedding. It all depends on how you use them. Bringing in different textures will differentiate between a summer and autumn feel. Make the most of the beautiful foliage around at that time of year and incorporate it into your bouquet and decor. And of course having a cute floral umbrella on hand like this isn't a foolish idea with the unpredictable weather during this time of year.

Plum Perfect Inspiration Board...

So the ol' bloggity blog is suffering a bit from my time-poor life right now and I'm having to rely a little on reposting. This is a board I did for The Perfect Palette a few weeks back. Using a recent invitation job I did for inspiration, the colour palette was just so incredibly pretty and luscious. With warm rose and plum tones, combined with a grey-brown shade it excludes girly sophistication. I love the idea of bringing berries into your bouquet or table decor to work these colours into the rest of your day. I hope this adds a little pretty to your day!
