Madame Tulle

Accessories

Madame Tulle began, unknowingly, when I said yes to the love of my life in 2013. As I was planning for my wedding, I couldn't seem to find a veil that fit into the bridal look I wanted for myself. It was the classic case of having a wardrobe full of choices yet having nothing to wear. What I ended up wearing down the aisle was OK, but didn't feel special and I wasn't over the moon with it. This experience lingered after my wedding day and it got me thinking - surely I wasn't the only bride feeling this frustration over her veil?

After carrying out extensive research (and I was introduced to Etsy along the way), I realised that while veils were still often worn by brides, there wasn't much thought or choice being put to them. I couldn't bear the thought of future brides going through what I had to go through. So I got to work - I experimented with different types and qualities of tulle, found patterns, and began making some veils that turned out to be my very first collection. Etsy made it easy for newcomer artisans like myself to be found and my products to be seen. Since then, I've done nothing but trial-and-error on the design and business end. I continue to learn as I go to be a better business owner and a creative professional, and I absolutely love it.

I thank the stars for modern technology, because it is now possible for brides from around the world - not just the ones based in Sydney or Australia - to find and choose what they truly want or need on their wedding day. There's no greater joy than having someone contacting me, wherever they may be, to help her make her bridal look complete.

Interview

IF I HAVE A FREE SUNDAY I WOULD SPEND IT… having breakfast at a local café with my husband, then putting up our feet on the couch with Netflix on and our cat wedged between us.

MY MOST MEMORABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE WAS… going to England in my early 20s. It wasn’t my first holiday destination choice at the time, but I ended travelling around on my own and fell in love with London, England's countryside and the layers of history found wherever I went.

THE COUNTRY I MOST WANT TO VISIT IS… Japan! I'm deeply fascinated by the country. Also, I’m a ramen lover.

WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY JOB IS… being able to express my creativity while being a witness to the special moment that brides-to-be experience when they fit a veil for the first time in my studio. It's priceless.

IF I DIDN’T DO THIS FOR A JOB I WOULD BE/DO… I honestly can’t think of anything else. I left my day job a few years ago to build Madame Tulle and there’s no turning back.

IF I COULD GIVE NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES ONE PIECE OF ADVICE IT WOULD BE…don’t rush things that need time to grow. And wear a veil =)

I LOVE WHERE I LIVE BECAUSE… I love Sydney weather, the blue sky, the beaches and its great food.

IF I COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD IT WOULD BE… on the road - I'd be a nomad.

MY FAVOURITE MOVIE IS? Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

THE PETS I OWN ARE… a grumpy-looking British Shorthair cat called Winston. He’s the only one who's allowed to be my boss.
