Southern California Photographer

Honest portraiture that documents the impermanence of life in beautiful detail.

Inspired by natural light and the look of analog photography, Talia and Juan Pinnel work with both film and digital mediums to create timeless yet modern photographs. Their ethereal light filled imagery is both raw and refined; the wild feminine tamed by the stoic masculine.

Each experience with the Pinnel team is artisanal; every detail thought out. Cultivating connection, they lead with a sense of purpose and awareness. Their warmth and calm presence puts their clients at ease, allowing what is real between them to shine through in their photos.

With two decades of experience behind the camera, their work has been published in Style Me Pretty, Once Wed, Modern Luxury, C Magazine, Carats and Cake and more. Pinnel Photography is based in California but would be happy to join you anywhere in the world.

Interview

IF WE HAVE A FREE SUNDAY WE WOULD SPEND IT… when we have a free Sunday, we start the day by practicing meditation and then cooking a brunch of homemade pancakes while sipping tea and listening to our latest record finds on our record player. After we’d go for a hike in the mountains or for a walk on the beach. We like to make a big picnic and stay for awhile, usually until sunset. Sometimes we also grab our cameras and go for a short road trip to the Santa Ynez Valley or somewhere inspiring in nature where we can take in the fresh air and vast views while making some landscape photographs.

OUR MOST MEMORABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE WAS… a few years ago we travelled to a very remote area in the Himalayas in India, close to the border of Tibet. Here there is no electricity or cell phone service, but just the pure, pristine experience of nature. Being there for about a month allowed us to completely disconnect from our busy lives and reset our minds in a way we have never experienced before.

THE COUNTRY WE MOST WANT TO VISIT IS… Juan would love to road trip across the United States, visiting all of the amazing natural monuments and national parks. Talia would love to travel to the Amalfi Coast and to Tuscany in Italy.

WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT OUR JOB IS… that it allows us to connect creatively with people in a very unique way. It also brings us to many new and beautiful places that we would have otherwise never discovered. As artists, we also enjoy the sheer act of creating with light, shape, and colour.

IF WE DIDN’T DO THIS FOR A JOB WE WOULD BE… Juan can’t imagine doing anything other than a job that would require a camera in hand. Talia would be a floral designer or natural doctor.

IF WE COULD GIVE NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES ONE PIECE OF ADVICE IT WOULD BE… go on adventures. Have fun. Make good memories. Be kind to each other and to everyone you meet. Live life well, and enjoy every moment.

WE LOVE WHERE WE LIVE BECAUSE… the natural beauty where we live in incredible and we are grateful to be able to experience it every day.

IF WE COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD IT WOULD BE… we are very happy living in Santa Barbara, California. If we didn’t live here, we would probably try to figure out how to live here. Lol. If Santa Barbara didn’t exist, then we would probably live somewhere in Northern California along the coast and near the redwoods.

OUR FAVOURITE MOVIE IS? A Bout de Soufflé (Breathless) by Goddard, In the Mood for Love by Wang Kar Wai, or Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Andersen

THE PETS WE OWN ARE… we love animals, but don’t have one because we travel so much. For now, we just love on our friends and siblings pets.
