Radostina Photography

Bulgaria Photographer & San Francisco Photographer

Radostina loves simplicity. Her minimalist approach, combined with white and clean lines, is the definition of elegance. Each one of her photos uses negative space as a visual element, giving the subject room to breathe and lending a sense of airiness. Favoring neutral tones, her work is organic, with a touch of romanticism and modernism. Radostina's use of film brings richness to her prints that cannot be surpassed in our digital world.
Born in Varna, Bulgaria. Radostina first picked up a camera at the age of thirty - influenced by Scandinavian design magazines, the Dutch masters, and her love for history and past times.

After finishing her Master's in Arts she made the move to Sofia and then to the Czech Republic, where she naturally felt the transition to graphic design, styling, and art direction. Somewhere here in the middle of her Czech adventure, the passion for photography was born and was so strong that she completely switch her career. A couple of years later - she embarked on her first trip to the United States and never looked back. Radostina calls now San Francisco her home.

Interview

IF I HAVE A FREE SUNDAY I WOULD SPEND IT… I would drive the scenic Highway 1 (PCH) along the California coastline, or I would go wine tasting in Napa or Sonoma.

MY MOST MEMORABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE WAS… probably that would be the first time I went to Maui. To me it looked like a completely different world, like paradise – instead of busy and stressed people, I found happy, smiling people who live a simple life and appreciate what they have.

THE COUNTRY I MOST WANT TO VISIT IS… Japan. It’s at the top of my list and I’m already making plans to go. I’m pretty sure it will be love at first sight since I adore Japanese design and aesthetics, wabi-sabi, and food. I’m so looking forward to seeing that place. After that, the next destination probably would be Australia - the design scene there is just amazing, plus nature and that excites me a lot.

WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY JOB IS… I love all things beautiful. Literally. And weddings usually are a place where you can meet all these happy and beautiful people, stunning flower arrangements, wedding designs, music, the smiles, the tears, the hugs and two people in love. I just love to show the happier parts of life – that’s yet another reason why I shoot on film – it captures everything more natural, organic and, of course, the film grain is just remarkable.

IF I DIDN’T DO THIS FOR A JOB I WOULD BE/DO… since I hold a history degree and I’m fascinated by the times gone by, I would probably be an archeologist or a historian. On the other hand, I love design, especially interior design and styling, so maybe I could be the next Axel Vervoordt or Sibella Court?

IF I COULD GIVE NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES ONE PIECE OF ADVICE IT WOULD BE…when you are planning your special day, try to focus on making it special for you, not for your family, friends or anybody else but mainly for you. After all, this day is a celebration of your love.

I LOVE WHERE I LIVE BECAUSE… Oh, where should I begin? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and it’s no secret that California is an amazing place. The word that I would probably use to describe it is diversity. Starting with the people – so many different cultures, languages, ideas, success stories, well and failures, too, and so many examples about dedication, hard work, and innovation. Plus, let’s not forget nature. You can see deserts, mountains, the stunning coastline of Northern California, and the golden beaches down South. And one of the things that still amazes me here in San Francisco is that I don’t have to look at the weather forecast. Every day is about the same – foggy, chilly mornings turn into warm and sunny days.

IF I COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD IT WOULD BE… somewhere in Italy or Spain. But I also love Berlin, although it’s a bit too cold for my liking so let’s stay in Italy.

MY FAVOURITE MOVIE IS? Life is beautiful.

MOST MEMORABLE MEAL I’VE EVER EATEN WAS… Fresh Ahi Tuna in Maui.

THE PETS I OWN ARE… Fuji – my one-year-old English Bulldog, who is clumsy, fearful, and stubborn.
