Rae Marshall Photography

North Carolina Photographer

My name is Rae and I've been a photographer for over half of my life. It's been the greatest joy of my life to work as an artist and business owner that seeks out beauty for a living. I love beautiful florals, lush tablescapes and glamorous sunsets like the best of them, however I love to find beauty in the quiet moments. The ones where no one else may be looking. I care about the tear rolling down grandmother's face, the nervous flutters on his face before the first look, the kid that fell asleep because the party went past his bedtime.  I love to mix them both together. Details are great, but that's not the full story.

My style of photography is editorial with personality, with crisp, timeless colours. I love romance mixed with a little bit of edge. I lived in Hawaii for five years and fell in love with epic landscapes and retaining the vibrance of the world around us without dulling colour. My strongest trait on a wedding day is being calm and confident through the chaos, always having a plan, and giving easy and fun direction when it's needed. Otherwise, I'll fade into the background while you dance the night away, getting captures you will cherish forever.

Interview

IF I HAVE A FREE SUNDAY I WOULD SPEND IT… with my family because my two little boys are simply obsessed with me. We'll see how long that lasts though!

MY MOST MEMORABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE WAS… my first trip to Italy with my husband, we honeymooned in Positano on the Amalfi Coast.  I was already a photographer at the time and so we did a couples session there where we borrowed a vespa from our hotel and everyone was cheering and honking as they drove past us.

THE COUNTRY I MOST WANT TO VISIT IS… Japan. I've been to Tokyo once and loved every minute but I'd really love to explore so much more as I know there is so much to see and experience.

WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY JOB IS… getting to experience the most beautiful moments, for other people but also for myself.  I get to watch first looks, parents tearing up, kids watching their parents say I do, it's all magical.  I have also gotten to travel all over for my job and meet people from all over the world.  I love seeing the similarities in humanity. No matter what culture or location, people are just longing for connection and love.

IF I DIDN’T DO THIS FOR A JOB I WOULD BE… probably a website designer or maybe a stylist. Something that still dealt with creativity and design.

IF I COULD GIVE NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES ONE PIECE OF ADVICE IT WOULD being right is not as important as showing the other person that you are listening and wanting to understand their point of view too.

I LOVE WHERE I LIVE BECAUSE… Raleigh is my ideal city because it's big enough for there to be a lot to do and see, but not too big where the traffic is horrible and you're just drowning in people.  I love that people enjoy living here and it's a good quality of life. It's a great place for kids and a wonderful place for people like me who love weddings.

IF I COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD IT WOULD BE… right here! Otherwise maybe in Italy for a few months.

MY FAVOURITE MOVIE IS? Big Fish. It's a more obscure movie about a man who tells his son larger than life stories about his life that his son knows aren't true. But the end of the movie reveals that maybe it was a mix of reality and fantasy, so what? If that's how you see your life, then it is real.

MOST MEMORABLE MEAL I’VE EVER EATEN WAS… a 7 course home cooked meal on the top of a mountain in Positano.

THE PETS I OWN ARE… I own a cat named Dragon. She's ferociously sweet.
