The Potted Pansy

Utah Floral Design

Hi! I’m Mandy, and I’m also the person who is going to be just as excited about your wedding as you are!

I’m a desert-loving, tumbleweed searching, interior and floral design combo who thrives on a creative balance of texture, colour and style. My love for textural components found in nature, combined with a unique balance of lush and texture, and finally enhanced with a bit of wild, is what creates the signature pieces that your guests will ooh and ahh over!

Fall is my favourite time of year and I bask in the golden light, rust coloured leaves, and brisk breeze! You’ll often find me among those leaves, in the dry Utah landscape foraging for sticks and leaves, and yep, weeds! All the weeds!

Interview

IF I HAVE A FREE WEEKEND I WOULD SPEND IT… Digging in the dirt, working hard, smelling newly mowed lawn and listening to the sprinklers click back and forth. Preparing for a picnic or bbq in the mountains. Good food. Listening to the girls laughter as they run and play while the stream or lake bubbles in the background. Letting the evening fade into night in front of a fire, watching the flames until we are almost asleep.

BUT before all that, we’d do this... Cozy. Cuddled up by the fire under a blanket, reading a book. That’s if it’s winter. Sitting on the back porch soaking in the morning sun, mate in hand, listening to the birds and the girl’s laughter. They’re already awake, wet, and enjoying all that is summer. That’s summer.

Walking the yard looking at what plants are popping out of the earth, pulling a weed here and there, and taking in deep breaths of the blossom’s scent. That’s definitely spring.
And fall. Just the thought of it makes my soul happy. Taking a morning walk. Hearing the crunch of leaves under my feet. Feeling the excitement of the weather change and the way it makes my heart skip a beat. Mesmerised by the glow of the earth during this time of year. THAT is my beloved fall.

THE COUNTRY I MOST WANT TO VISIT IS… I want to go back to the Grecian islands. I was enamoured on my first visit and am planning to return soon!

WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY JOB IS… The art of it all! Colour, texture, space, movement. The fact that each piece is a creation in and of itself. That on it’s own each of the flowers hold their own beauty, but together they create power. Nature is indeed imperfect and I am comforted in the way we can see our own lives through it. In our studio, we embrace the way the outer petals of a rose are worn and weathered. Imperfect and bruised by all standards, and yet, it is those petals that are protecting the inner perfect. The inner petals that are pristine and untouched. It’s those outer petals, the protecting, worn petals, that we leave on in our studio. They’re symbolic and beautiful and imperfect. And we love them that way. That’s what I love about what I do. Those subtle imperfections and the way they teach us.

IF I DIDN’T DO THIS FOR A JOB I WOULD BE… an Interior Designer! My formal education is in interiors and I still play house when I have the chance! But my secret love is weaving. I love all things textile and want to grow old with my hands caressing a loom, while sitting in front of a roaring fire!

IF I COULD GIVE NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES ONE PIECE OF ADVICE IT WOULD BE… do it your way. Forget all the “should do’s” and “must do’s”. That’s not a thing anymore. Find something that is truly you; the two of you. And do that. Express you, your love. Maybe the way you met is special. Maybe something the two of you always do together or funny names you have for each other are unique. Maybe it means a party or maybe it means quiet and simple and the two of you. Maybe your wedding looks like other weddings, but maybe it doesn’t. And as long as it FEELS like you, the rest doesn’t matter. At all.

I LOVE WHERE I LIVE BECAUSE… I love the desert. The way the simplest of plants push through their extreme conditions to give us something beautiful. The way a tiny little plant pushes through the earth to survive, live, and thrive, despite all of the harsh surrounding that say it should not. Often times that something is a single flower before it withers away. But even after it fades, the plant gives us more. Have you ever taken the opportunity to really inspect a tumbleweed?

IF I COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD IT WOULD BE… my heart longs for Chile always. And honestly, if we could live anywhere, it would be a cross between time spent here in the desert during the warm months and time spent on the Chilean coast and southern lakes in the summer months. You’re getting it... summer. We would live in summer! 6 months here and 6 months there!

MY FAVOURITE MOVIE IS? I’m not much of a movie person. I enjoy reading much more! My favourite book of all time is The Count of Monte Cristo. The movie wasn’t too bad either!
